ACTNJ – Winn Khuong, speaks at March WCAT Meeting

Whether you’re a policy wonk or just someone who cares about your local utility bill and air quality, the March WCAT meeting delivered some heavy-hitting insights from Uyen “Winn” Khuong, Executive Director of Action Together New Jersey (ATNJ).
Here are the two high-stakes issues ATNJ is tackling right now:
1. The Clean Air Win: “Last-Mile” Electric Delivery Trucks
While long-haul semis get the headlines, Winn highlighted that the real impact for NJ residents lies in the smaller delivery trucks (like the Amazon-style vans) that are literally everywhere, all day long.
- The Reality: These vehicles typically drive less than 100 miles a day, making them perfect candidates for electrification right now.
- The Impact: Because these “last-mile” trucks circulate through our residential neighborhoods and school zones constantly, switching them to electric would immediately slash toxic exhaust and noise where we live and breathe.
2. The Red Flag: Data Centers vs. Our Resources
The “AI Boom” is hitting New Jersey, but our towns aren’t ready for the “Industrial-Scale” footprint of data centers. Winn warned that without strict guardrails, these facilities pose three major threats:
- Water Guzzling: A single data center can consume millions of gallons of water daily for cooling—a massive strain on our local aquifers.
- Grid Infrastructure: Our local grids weren’t built for these “energy vampires,” and the cost of upgrading them often falls on the taxpayers, not the tech companies.
- Noise Pollution: In a state as crowded as ours, the industrial hum of massive cooling fans is a direct hit to the quiet and quality of life in residential neighborhoods.
Winn’s Message: Innovation is great, but not if it drains our water, hikes our taxes, and keeps us awake at night.
